Amazon has promised to crack down on fake reviews and sellers using them to manipulate product ratings following an investigation by the UK competition watchdog.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) highlighted the significant influence fake reviews have on consumer decisions, with about 90% of UK shoppers relying on reviews for their purchases.
Amazon's commitments include strengthening systems to detect fake reviews, combating 'catalogue abuse', imposing sanctions on sellers using fake reviews, and banning users posting fake reviews.
The CMA's focus now shifts to reviewing compliance with new laws by specialist review platforms, businesses listing products, and reviewers, under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.
