The Centre has relaxed sulphur emission rules for most coal power plants, exempting 79 percent of them from installing flue-gas desulphurisation systems.
Plants located beyond 10 km from pollution hotspots will not be required to install the FGD systems.
A case-by-case review will be conducted for 11 percent of the plants, while the remaining 10 percent near major cities like Delhi must comply by December 2027.
The easing of rules follows a detailed analysis by the Central Pollution Control Board regarding increased carbon dioxide emissions due to control measures, according to the notification issued.
