General Motors (GM) has decided to shut down its autonomous taxi unit, Cruise, and focus on self-driving and driver assistance technology.
GM aims to buy out Cruise's remaining shareholders and integrate its robotaxi technologies into existing autonomous vehicle and assisted driving systems.
The shutdown of Cruise is expected to result in job losses and save GM $1 billion annually from 2025.
Cruise has faced challenges, including accidents, traffic jams, and suspension of its licence to operate fully autonomous vehicles in California.
