Mercado Bitcoin plans to tokenise over $200 million in real-world assets on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) as the sector is expected to grow to $19 trillion by 2033, according to a report by Ripple and Boston Consulting Group.
The XRPL, launched in 2012, allows for efficient tokenisation of assets with near-instant, low-cost transactions and has processed over 3.3 billion transactions without any failures.
Mercado Bitcoin's move signifies its global expansion strategy and aims to enhance liquidity and access to regulated digital products across South America and Europe, building upon its current success in tokenising private credit assets.
Ripple, a key partner in the XRPL ecosystem, supports Mercado Bitcoin's integration onto the XRPL and has collaborated on various initiatives, such as facilitating cross-border treasury flows and listing stablecoins on the exchange.
