Ministers are considering handing over ownership of the Post Office to its operators after the Horizon IT scandal, with the Department for Business and Trade initiating the first review of the organization in 15 years.
The green paper for the review will assess the ownership model of the Post Office, potentially including mutualisation and discussions with branch managers about ownership transfer.
The ongoing review follows the Horizon IT scandal where approximately 1,000 post office operators were wrongly prosecuted due to faulty accounting software, resulting in one of the most significant miscarriages of justice in UK history.
The government plans to provide financial support to the Post Office for restructuring and transformation, while discussions on reuniting the Post Office and Royal Mail have sparked criticism from the Communications Workers Union (CWU).
