Railways to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches, 15,000 locos for enhanced passenger safety

  • Railways to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives for enhanced passenger safety to prevent incidents involving miscreants and organised gangs targeting passengers.
  • Cameras will be strategically placed in the common movement area near the doors of the coaches to preserve passenger privacy with 4 dome type cameras per railway coach and 6 cameras per locomotive.
  • This includes cameras at each entrance way in coaches, and 1 each at the front, rear, and on both sides of the locomotive, along with microphones for audio recording.
  • Efforts are being made to ensure high-quality footage even at speeds exceeding 100 kmph and in low lighting conditions. Plans to utilize AI on CCTV data in partnership with the IndiaAI mission were discussed during a recent review meeting.
