Zoox has issued its second voluntary software recall in a month after a collision in San Francisco involving one of its robotaxis and an e-scooter rider on May 8.
The incident involved an unoccupied Zoox vehicle being hit by the e-scooter after braking to yield at an intersection at low speed. This follows a previous recall of 270 vehicles due to concerns over the software's ability to predict other road users' movements.
Zoox has shared information and video with regulators and released a software update to improve perception tracking and prevent vehicle movement when a vulnerable road user is nearby.
The recall addresses the risk of robotaxis continuing to move after a collision, potentially harming other road users. Zoox's past recalls in March were related to unexpected hard braking incidents involving its autonomous driving system.
