How Embracing the Change Curve Empowered Me To Grow as an Entrepreneur

  • Growing a business requires being willing and able to adapt to changes. Entrepreneurs tend to embrace change, but it can still be scary. The Kübler-Ross Change Curve® outlines the emotional stages we experience during major changes and helps us understand our own and others’ responses to unexpected changes. It has four stages: Shock/Denial, Anger/Fear, Acceptance/Exploration, and Integration. Founder of vChief, Maddy Niebauer, used a simplified Change Curve model with the four stages. She had difficulty delegating core functions of the business, fearing business failure. Extracting herself from the daily operations of her business improved her company's operations and enabled its growth.
  • In Phase 1, Niebauer denied that a change was necessary. In Phase 2, she was scared to let go of core business functions. In Phase 3, she identified which responsibilities she could let go of and pursued the design of a solution. In Phase 4, Niebauer delegated business development to a fractional executive and sales rep, and eventually client-candidate matching as vChief grew on Inc. 5000's list four years in a row. Niebauer was then able to build vChief's long-term vision on growth.
  • Understanding and applying the Change Curve helped her design a transition plan that could have easily been resisted for much longer but was necessary to achieve her goals. Extracting herself from daily business operations unlocked a major phase of growth for her company and placed her back in the right seat. Entrepreneurs should embrace the Change Curve model to deal with unexpected and unwanted changes in their business.

  • Founders should have a viable strategy for reaching and securing customers rapidly and profitably, and it is important to ask about their choice of channels and experiments to validate CAC assumptions.
  • The sequencing of experiments from customer value proposition to GTM to profit formula may vary, but founders should demonstrate strategic thinking and adaptability in their test selection.
  • Understanding metrics like CAC, churn rate, and customer lifetime value (LTV) is crucial, and investors should ask insightful questions about their implications and plans for improvement.
