Malaysian electric company, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), has reported losses of over $100 million due to electricity theft related to illegal Bitcoin mining.
TNB has been experiencing increasing losses year-on-year since 2020, with losses reaching RM103 million in 2023 alone.
In addition to financial losses, over $500,000 worth of electrical equipment used for illicit mining operations has been confiscated.
The Malaysian authorities are taking action against tax evasion and plan to investigate the thefts and factors contributing to the increasing loss trend.
