Winter Tires for SUVs and Trucks: What to Consider

  • Winter tires are a necessity during the winter months, even if you own a 4x4 or SUV.
  • Modern winter tires have improved rubber technology that enhances traction when temperatures drop, not just on snowy roads.
  • When it comes to choosing between an all-terrain tire and a true snow tire, your decision should be based on your driving conditions and preferences.
  • Winter tires designed for trucks and SUVs have sturdier sidewalls, more plies, and tougher compounds that make them more durable, resistant to punctures and capable of handling extra weight and size.
  • LT tires are a better choice for winter driving, as they have heavier construction, tougher compounds, and more plies, but may give up ride quality thanks to stiffer sidewalls.
  • Look for the '3PMSF' symbol when choosing winter tires, which confirms the tire has passed certain performance standards for winter conditions.
  • Don't mistake 'M+S' for the right tread design for winter tires, as it only indicates the tread pattern geometry and does not confirm the tire's performance capabilities.
  • The Sailun Ice Blazer WSTX is a good choice for winter driving, with better grip on snow and ice-covered roads thanks to its special rubber compound that stays pliable in colder conditions.
  • Winter tires provide extra traction, which helps with acceleration, braking and cornering. Even with 4x4 or SUVs, winter tires are a must-have to avoid landing in dangerous situations.
  • Winter tires on trucks and SUVs can help with acceleration and braking and cornering benefit immensely from the extra traction afforded by winter rubber. It's a good idea to install winter tires even if you own a 4x4 or SUV.

Could extended range EVs be commonplace? Experts think so

  • The extended range EV (EREV) is becoming a trend for drivers who want to go fully electric, but are concerned about range
  • EREVs have a full-size electric battery and one or multiple powerful electric motors. It also has a small gasoline generator that’s built exclusively to charge the battery
  • EREVs help eliminate range anxiety while serving as a fallback in emergencies
  • Many experts predict that true EVs won’t get much wider adoption until there are a few breakthroughs in EV battery technology that give them a longer range and faster charging speed
  • The longer range of EREVs means they won’t necessarily need to be charged as often, but they will need to be charged and refuelled using regular gasoline, adding extra inconvenience
  • EREVs still need to be charged, which is where the biggest issue with widespread adoption of any kind of electric vehicle comes into play
  • EREVs could still be a stopgap toward full electrification, but a stopgap that makes sense longer term, for certain drivers
  • EREVs are not widely available just yet, with only two models available and the Ram 1500 Ramcharger scheduled for release in the next few months
  • Until EVs have longer ranges and can charge faster, there are plenty of people who need a stopgap and who won’t be willing to switch to an all-electric vehicle
  • Drivers who can charge at home but aren’t quite willing to jump to a full EV may find that the EREV is the perfect alternative

  • Labrooy was inspired by his iPhone's 3D capture capabilities and wondered if he could create 3D versions of himself to incorporate into his art.
  • In the series, Labrooy's digital copies are shown squeezed, stacked, and positioned creatively within the frames of cars, such as the Porsche 911.
  • The project reflects Labrooy's unique sensibility of not taking himself too seriously and exploring new perspectives, no matter how absurd they may seem.
