A Presence-sensing drive for Securely Storing Secrets

  • Juergen designed the PECKUS (Presence Enforcing Crypto-Key USB-Storage) to securely store encryption keys by only unlocking if owner's Bluetooth device is nearby.
  • The device uses CircuitPython custom firmware on MakerDiary’s nRF52840 micro development kit and requires Bluetooth pairing and pressing a button on the board to access the stored file.
  • Although attackers could potentially defeat the system by extracting memory contents, Juergen aimed to provide an open-source and cost-effective protected storage solution for infrequently-used keyfiles.
  • The limited storage space in the device makes it suitable for specific security needs, offering an alternative to expensive commercial encrypted flash drives.
