The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is preparing to launch a new cloud-based tool to assign occupation codes to free text responses accurately.
The project, funded in 2023, is named the ABS whole of Australian government occupation coding service and is set to be operational in June.
The tool aims to reduce manual coding and enhance autocoding efficiency, as per coding redevelopment project manager Aidan Kent.
The ABS tool can classify occupations accurately based on varied descriptions input in free text fields, ensuring consistent coding for census data.
The project allows individuals to express their occupation in their own terms, which are then converted into structured classification codes for statistical purposes.
The previous ABS autocoding solution was limited, prompting the development of the cloud-based autocoder using AWS machine learning technology.
The new tool is not limited to census data but can be utilized by government departments for data classification based on occupation standards.
Automated coding enhances data quality and efficiency for departments collecting occupation data through surveys or web forms.
About 95 percent of records have been successfully classified through extensive testing, with only five percent requiring manual review.
The initiative aims to improve Australia's occupational data landscape and enhance coherence in data classification.
