The combination of humans and artificial intelligence (AI) often performed worse than humans or AI alone, according to a study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The study identified communication barriers, lack of effective coordination, trust issues, and ethical concerns as possible reasons for the poor performance of human-AI collaboration.
In tasks related to content creation, human-AI collaborations performed well due to the complementary strengths of humans and AI.
However, in decision making, human-AI synergy led to significantly negative performance, as AI's ability to process large datasets quickly did not effectively combine with human contextual interpretation and ethical judgment.
