Financial software company Intuit allegedly used AI-backed hiring assessment software provided by third-party vendor HireVue that discriminated against deaf and non-White individuals, the ACLU of Colorado asserted in a March 19 complaint.
The complaint claimed that the AI-backed video interview platform used by Intuit performs worse when evaluating non-White and deaf or hard of hearing speakers.
Intuit allegedly denied accommodation requests and rejected a deaf and Indigenous employee for a promotion due to her communication style, violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Employers should be aware of algorithmic bias and potential discrimination when using AI in hiring processes to prevent unintentional discrimination, according to HR professionals.
