Bharti Airtel’s request for an equity swap to convert its dues is likely to be rejected by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as the government believes Airtel is financially strong and does not require such support.
DoT conducted a preliminary assessment indicating Airtel's financial robustness compared to Vodafone Idea, with Airtel's net profit in FY25 rising significantly and revenues climbing, while Vodafone Idea faced losses and negative net worth.
Airtel sought the equity swap to conserve cash but missed the deadline for application, making it ineligible. The DoT believes there is no need to discuss the proposal as Airtel does not seem to require a financial bailout.
