Ford is recalling almost half a million Explorer SUVs from the 2016 and 2017 model years due to an issue that could cause exterior trim pieces to detach from the B-pillar while driving.
The recall impact 492,145 Explorers produced from June 2015 to April 2017, covering most models sold during those years, including Police Interceptor models.
The problem is related to a foam ring used to secure the B-pillar during production, which could detach over time, leading to the trim pieces coming off. Ford is developing a fix for the issue but has not reported any accidents or injuries related to it.
Affected owners will be notified by mail by mid-June, and Ford will repair the impacted vehicles free of charge as part of the recall.
