Central Railway has requested approximately 800 government and private offices in Mumbai to alter their work timings to reduce overcrowding in Mumbai locals during peak hours.
Around 3.5 million passengers travel on 1,810 local trains daily, leading to incessant crowding during peak hours, which poses a safety hazard to commuters.
Between January and May 2025, Mumbai local train accidents claimed the lives of 922 people, with 210 fatalities caused due to overcrowding and people falling from crowded trains.
The initiative aims at improving passenger safety and efficiency in Mumbai's transportation system, with 46 small offices already supporting the proposal and larger institutions expected to join for a more significant impact.
