Amazon has launched its first batch of 27 satellites as part of Project Kuiper, aiming to increase global broadband access through a constellation of over 3,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, competing against SpaceX's Starlink.
The project initially faced delays but has successfully deployed satellites 280 miles above Earth, adding capacity and coverage to the network.
The satellites are capable of delivering fast, affordable broadband to underserved communities and are coated with a unique dielectric mirror film to make them less visible to ground-based astronomers.
Amazon aims to meet the FCC deadline to deploy half its constellation by mid-2026, with plans to continue increasing production, processing, and deployment rates for future missions.
