AMD RDNA 4: everything we know so far about the RX 8000 series

  • AMD is planning to release the RDNA 4 graphics cards in early 2025. It is predicted to only release in two configurations, namely Navi 48 and Navi 44, for the mid-range sector. AMD has been clear that its focus is now on the mainstream segment. AMD is dealing with an oversupply of current-gen graphics cards — most of all, the flagship Navi 31. The Navi 48 could be a dual-chiplet GPU. AMD may not have an answer to Nvidia’s rumored RTX 5080 and RTX 5090.
  • Most sources estimate that the rumored RX 8800 XT should be close to RX 7900 XT in performance. AMD will target performance per dollar with its new cards.
  • The Navi 44 GPU might sell for under $400, while the flagship Navi 48 (RX 8800 XT?) could be priced around $500. AMD might adopt an aggressive pricing strategy this time around, beating Nvidia in terms of value.
  • Navi 44 and Navi 48 are reportedly built on TSMC’s N4P process. According to rumors, RDNA 4 might come with new work group processors (WGPs) and major architectural changes in ray tracing.
  • Improving ray tracing performance is something that a lot of leakers focus on. AMD wants to improve competition in AI workflows and ray tracing. However, it seems that AMD will not be able to beat NVIDIA in ray tracing.
  • The Navi 48 will be AMD’s flagship for this generation. Initial estimates show it having a 256-bit interface, with GDDR6 memory and possible 192-bit bus. Navi 44 GPU will sport a 128-bit memory bus and a smaller die.
  • AMD may have initially planned to use GDDR7 memory in the now-reportedly canceled high-end portion of the lineup. Early estimates said RDNA 4 might reach a 3.5GHz clock speed, now adjusted to 3GHz-3.3GHz on overclocked models.
  • The rest of the specs are still unknown, including the number of AI accelerators, ray tracing accelerators, and the amount of VRAM. Both AMD and Nvidia won’t release new GPUs until 2025.
  • If AMD can price the GPU at around $500, it would still be an excellent deal. AMD may see a price to performance increase of as much as 30%. The RX 7900 XTX should retain its lead in rasterization.
  • AMD is dealing with an oversupply of current-gen graphics cards, and the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT are at the lowest prices they’ve ever been. Nvidia’s RTX 50-series may not be much of a threat.
