North Dakota joins the 80-mph speed limit club for multi-lane highways, becoming the latest state to allow legal speeds of 80 mph.
The new bill was passed by North Dakota's legislature and signed into law by Governor Kelly Armstrong on May 5, with the 80-mph limit coming into effect on August 1.
Concerns about higher speed limits leading to more crashes were raised, but data from South Dakota, which raised its speed limit to 80 mph in 2015, showed no significant change in crashes or fatalities.
The 80-mph limit will mainly apply to multi-lane highways like Interstate 94 and Interstate 29, with variations based on conditions, while neighboring states like Montana have similar speed limits.
