Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol Plugs AI in the Matrix

  • Anthropic has open-sourced its Model Context Protocol (MCP) as its standard for connecting AI assistants to external data sources and repositories.
  • Anthropic's MCP has an array of servers that utilise APIs from popular apps including Spotify, Google Maps, Todolist and Brave.
  • Exa AI was able to integrate their tool into Claude using MCP and also made the code available on GitHub.
  • MCP invitees built innovative use cases during the hackathon based on MCP, one noteworthy example being an LLM video editor.
  • Anthropic's MCP works at the protocol layer, which is the highest level in an LLM, while techniques like RAG or GraphRAG work at a model level.
  • MCP's high level of abstraction can cause confusion and some users may not be clear on what exactly happens between the client and the server.
  • MCP will require critical security upgrades going forward with identified vulnerabilities such as bypassing read-only restrictions and executing code.
  • The potential capabilities of marrying MCP with Claude's other capabilities included building MCP servers for legacy software, using Computer Use to automate it.
  • Developers were able to build on top of the MCP open-source framework that was recently introduced, connecting AI assistants to external repositories.
  • Younger startups may gain visibility if their apps can be accessed inside Claude through MCP integration.
