Apple Frames 3.3 has been released, adding support for all new Apple devices released in 2024 such as M4 iPad Pro, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro lineup, 42mm and 46mm Apple Watch Series 10.
The update for Apple Frames is free and users will get to experience the new features once they update the shortcut. The advanced API introduced last year is also supported in this new update.
The app creator faced a bug that prevented him from updating Apple Frames for new device releases since May 2024 as the Overlay Image action removed the alpha transparency of a PNG. Douglas and Antonio identified the culprit, which happened to be that some screenshots were captured in 16-bit Display P3 instead of 8-bit sRGB. Apple has not documented this.
However, the creator realised the issue was not with the screenshots but the frame assets. With this strategy, the creator was able to produce an update of Apple Frames that works with 8-bit and 16-bit screenshots with all frame assets being downloaded and used by the shortcut being made of 16-bit PNGs.
Apple Frames is compiled with new frame support and also has an advanced API that allows automating input images and framed results. The API can be run via the Shortcuts app, as a Home Screen widget, as a Finder Quick Action, or through the share sheet.
The developer discovered that iOS/iPadOS 18 was capturing some screenshots in 16-bit Display P3 instead of 8-bit sRGB.
Antonia Bueno proposed a workaround that used JavaScript to redraw every screenshot passed to the shortcut with a different RGB profile that happened locally, on-device. It worked, but it added a lot of latency to the shortcut due to increased memory consumption.
Silvia helped by re-exporting 68 more frame assets that were older Apple devices supported by Apple Frames but no longer available as PSDs on Apple’s website. Upscaling 8-bit PNGs to 16-bit files is explained further in John’s story for the MacStories Weekly for Club members.
Apple Frames is now fully compatible with 8-bit and 16-bit screenshots, and it is more efficient than ever before.
