Apple CEO Tim Cook recently revealed that the company's focus in the foreseeable future will be on health and wellness, and Bloomberg reports that cameras and health sensors are set to be added to AirPods as a result.
Apple was working on integrating cameras into the wireless earbuds but put the project on hold, however it was brought back to life after the company rallied around AI and the Apple Intelligence platform.
Apple has tasked teams with working on the integration as a priority project, which may take several years to complete.
Meta is also developing earbuds with on-board cameras called CameraBuds, which will use generative AI for language translation and object identification.
In addition to cameras, Apple is hoping to fit heart rate sensors into AirPods, and in the future, also measure temperature levels and keep an eye on physical activity patterns.
Apple is considered a pioneer in the wearable health market and has both the engineering capabilities and ambition needed to pull off heart rate tracking and camera vision on AirPods.
According to the MIT Media Lab, earbuds with photoplethysmography sensors have been shown to reliably measure heart rates.
Apple CEO Tim Cook believes that Apple's biggest contribution will be in the health sector.
It may take a couple of years, or more, for the health and camera capabilities to be added to AirPods.
AirPods recently landed a hearing assistance facility and is visibly at the center of Apple's ambitions in the health and wellness arena.
