Apple, Mastercard, and Visa dodge antitrust lawsuit over payments regarding alleged collusion to maintain the current status quo in point-of-sale-payment card services.
The lawsuit filed by beverage retailer Mirage Wine and Spirits claimed Apple was accepting bribes to limit the development of its payment network and keep iPhone NFC-based 'tap to pay' functionality exclusive.
The judge dismissed the lawsuit due to lack of evidence that Apple intended to launch its payment network. Apple collaborates with Visa and Mastercard for Apple Pay and its financial products like Apple Cash (Visa) and Apple Card (Mastercard).
Although the claims suggested payment arrangements between Apple and the card networks, the judge deemed them circumstantial. Apple has, however, opened up NFC tap-to-pay transactions to external developers after facing regulatory pressure.
