Apple now allows third-party developers in the European Union to integrate cellular phone calls and carrier-based SMS/MMS/RCS messaging within their apps.
This move is in compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act and marks a significant shift from Apple's previous restriction to just VoIP calls in third-party apps.
The new TelephonyMessagingKit framework, currently in beta, enables third-party apps to engage in traditional phone calls and exchange SMS, MMS, and RCS messages exclusively for iPhone devices in the EU.
Although this feature is only available in the EU for now, it highlights Apple's shift towards enabling more functionality for third-party apps, unlike the current exclusivity in the US and other regions.
