The Australian government plans to introduce a levy on social media firms and search engines to force them to pay publishers for journalism and news content.
This comes after Facebook parent Meta Platforms ended its licensing deal with the Australian government.
Australia passed the Media Bargaining Law in February 2021 to set fees that tech companies have to pay media outlets for sharing news links.
The proposed amendments would require social media platforms and search engines earning more than $250m in revenues from Australia to pay a 'charge', which can be offset against payments to publishers.
