The New South Wales (NSW) Government and the Australian Border Force are collaborating to crackdown on foreign drivers exploiting a loophole in the demerit point system.
Foreign drivers in Australia can currently nominate another overseas motorist if charged with a driving offence, resulting in the transfer of demerit points.
Around 125,000 penalties carrying 256,000 demerit points were issued to nominated 'international drivers' between May 2022 and January 2024, with up to 40,000 drivers sourced from the dark web.
To address this issue, the NSW government established the Demerit Point Integrity Taskforce, and the Australian Border Force will assist in verifying the identity of nominated drivers.
