<ul><li>The New South Wales (NSW) Government and the Australian Border Force are collaborating to crackdown on foreign drivers exploiting a loophole in the demerit point system.</li><li>Foreign drivers in Australia can currently nominate another overseas motorist if charged with a driving offence, resulting in the transfer of demerit points.</li><li>Around 125,000 penalties carrying 256,000 demerit points were issued to nominated 'international drivers' between May 2022 and January 2024, with up to 40,000 drivers sourced from the dark web.</li><li>To address this issue, the NSW government established the Demerit Point Integrity Taskforce, and the Australian Border Force will assist in verifying the identity of nominated drivers.</li></ul>
