AWS is launching a European Sovereign Cloud in Brandenburg, Germany by 2025 to meet Europe's data sovereignty standards.
The new cloud region will be managed by EU-resident AWS employees, using local certificates and networking infrastructure from European providers for strict sovereignty and security compliance.
The sovereign cloud structure will be based in Germany with a management team led by AWS's Kathrin Renz and a Security Operations Center staffed by EU citizens to ensure local security monitoring and threat management.
The €7.8 billion investment will support this standalone cloud operation offering services like AI, compute, databases, and security, part of AWS's global expansion strategy with plans for 16 new Availability Zones and five regions.
