BMW won't be building a new supercar like the iconic M1 anytime soon as the project was canceled at the last minute.
The company's focus is on high-performance models currently, with the upcoming Neue Klasse architecture supporting electric and gas-powered versions of the M3.
The new M1 that BMW was working on would have been a 600-horsepower plug-in hybrid, but the project was scrapped in favor of the XM.
BMW believed customers preferred SUVs over sports cars, leading to the decision to prioritize the XM, which is not selling well currently.
