  • The oil tanker named Eagle S is believed to have caused the damage after crossing the Estlink 2 electricity cable on Wednesday
  • The Finnish Customs service confirm they suspect the oil tanker belongs to Russia's "shadow fleet" of tankers looking to avoid sanctions on Russian oil sales
  • The Eagle S was seized by the coast guard, which took command of the vessel and sailed it into Finnish waters
  • The Finnish and Estonian Government have held emergency meetings to assess the damage
  • The incident comes at a time where there is a high level of concern over subsea cables' vulnerability amidst the tense geopolitical situation concerning Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine
  • Earlier this month, a new advisory body under the jurisdiction of the United Nations held its first virtual meeting to promote best practices and principles to protect critical submarine cables, with the aim of increasing cable resilience
  • The body is responsible for ensuring the speedy repair and timely deployment of submarine cables
