Australian architecture studio Bates Smart has designed a new embassy in Washington DC, replacing the 1960s facility on the same property. The embassy's design draws inspiration from Australia's emerging architectural culture and the monolithic forms of its landscape. The 9,890-square meter complex features a monolithic form clad with glass and copper panels, creating varying degrees of openness. The embassy's interior incorporates Australian timber and showcases Indigenous artworks, aiming for LEED Gold and Greenstar ratings.
