Researchers in Queensland, Australia have developed a biodegradable fruit or vegetable punnet that decomposes in soil, fresh water, the ocean, and compost.
The punnet is made from a 'bio composite' material consisting of bacteria-produced biodegradable polyester and wood fibers, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging.
The development of this eco-friendly punnet aims to replace the 580 million plastic punnets used annually and reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste.
The researchers believe that this bio composite material can be extended to various food packaging and plastic applications, contributing to the phasing out of petrol-based plastics.
