Visit Big Bear, an organization promoting responsible visitation and environmental stewardship, replaced a planned fireworks show with a drone show to protect bald eagles nesting in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The decision to cancel the fireworks display was made to avoid disrupting the newly hatched eaglets and their parents, Jackie and Shadow, who have been nesting near Big Bear Lake since 2013.
The silent 15-minute drone show, accompanied by patriotic music, was launched from Pine Knot Marina during Memorial Day weekend and was well-received by residents and visitors.
This initiative reflects the community's commitment to eco-conscious practices and leveraging technology to harmonize celebration with conservation, setting an example for other communities to follow.
