Billy Joel has canceled the rest of his concert tour after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a rare brain disorder causing issues with hearing, vision, balance, and memory.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles, creating pressure on brain tissue and leading to brain damage if untreated.
Symptoms of NPH include struggles with walking, balance, vision, memory, hearing, mood regulation, and urinary incontinence, with diagnosis involving physical exams, tests, and spinal taps.
NPH is usually treatable and reversible, commonly addressed by implanting a shunt into the brain to drain excess fluid into other parts of the body like the abdomen.
