The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) in Alabama, with 617 sworn officers, has launched a new drone program to enhance public safety.
The initiative follows the appointment of Michael Pickett as the interim Chief of Police and approval of funding by the Birmingham City Council for the state-of-the-art drone program.
Inspired by the successful drone programs in neighboring municipalities like Hoover, the BPD will acquire 16 DJI Matrice 4TD drones for $1.5 million to assist in police operations.
The drones will serve various purposes such as rapid response to police calls, search and rescue missions, public event monitoring, evidence collection, and traffic incident management, enhancing the department's capabilities and efficiency.
