Bjarke Ingels Group unveils a new stepped concrete tower design along Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal, featuring distinctive stepped forms and sculpted voids that bend towards light, air, and water.
The tower, located at 175 Third Street, comprises more than 1,000 residential units, including around 250 affordable ones, integrating artist studios, retail spaces, and a public waterfront esplanade designed to withstand flood risk and enhance biodiversity.
Designed as an ultra-low-energy building, the project references the area's industrial past through exposed concrete structures, large openings for natural light, and amenities like fitness areas and a rooftop pool offering views towards Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
BIG's focus on resilient urban design is evident in the project that balances form, infrastructure, and landscape, contributing to the transformation of Gowanus from a post-industrial terrain to a vibrant waterfront destination.
