Michael Haas, a white man, is suing the City of Akron and its fire department for alleged discrimination after being passed over for a promotion in favor of Sierjie Lash, a Black woman who was appointed Captain.
Haas claims that the city's 'Rule of Five' policy was used to discriminate against him based on his age, race, and gender.
The lawsuit alleges that Lash's disciplinary record was expunged to qualify for the promotion, while Haas faced penalties for similar conduct.
Haas' lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against supervisors involved, expunging negative documentation, a position he believes he was entitled to, and more than $25,000 in damages.
