Briefing: Stripe’s plant-based APIs

  • Airtable has launched a major set of new AI capabilities to gear up for its IPO, such as a new App Library and a new tool called HyberDB. Meanwhile, Shopify also announced a major change to its API: it’s going all in on GraphQL.
  • Stripe has streamlined its API product release process to make it easier for engineers. Each semiannual major API release will be named after a 🌳 tree or plant where APIs are growing systems that require careful maintenance.
  • Microsoft has redesigned Copilot across its web, desktop app, and mobile. The UX looks similar to Pi, a personalized AI assistant which Microsoft hired several folks earlier this year including Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind’s co-founder. Suleyman also announced a series of Copilot products including Copilot Vision.
  • OpenAI has generated ~73% of its revenues from ChatGPT subscriptions according to FutureSearch. Conversely, Anthropic is generating over ~85% of its revenues from its API products, FutureSearch states.
  • Udemy gave instructors the chance to opt-out of training its generative AI models, and after the deadline, instructors can no longer opt out.
  • Prompt caching, a new update from OpenAI, will allow engineers to reuse previously used prompts between different API calls, potentially dropping API costs further.
  • According to an analysis of Stripe data, AI startups have faster-growing revenue than previous generations, but considering that AI startups have a much higher marginal cost than traditional SaaS companies, they need to push for revenues as early as possible.
  • Disney+ reports over 10 million hours of content have been watched by users so far on its new Streams feature.
  • WhatsApp’s paid messaging feature has generated revenues in the billions according to product chief Alice Newton-Rex.
  • Sonos has outlined its turnaround plan after its new app rollout was a disaster.
