Potato production in Bengal has surged to 115 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 as compared to 100 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
Despite the bumper crop, low demand has led to a 50% drop in wholesale potato prices in Bengal.
Due to subdued demand and oversupply, wholesale potato prices for the Jyoti variety have decreased to Rs 12-14 per kg from Rs 24-25 per kg last year.
Traders associations are requesting the government to intervene and support farmers facing financial losses by purchasing potatoes for usage in mid-day meals at government schools.
