Bumper crop, low demands cause potato prices to fall 50% in Bengal

  • Potato production in Bengal has increased to 115 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, the highest since 2012-13, leading to a significant fall in wholesale prices.
  • Despite the bumper crop, low demands for potatoes have resulted in wholesale prices dropping to around Rs 12-14 per kg for the Jyoti variety, down from Rs 24-25 per kg a year ago.
  • Cold storage loading prices have decreased to around Rs 7-8 per kg, causing financial losses to farmers who were earlier receiving Rs 10 per kg in February-March.
  • The government is considering interventions such as buying potatoes directly from farmers to help mitigate their losses, as traders associations seek support to prevent significant financial repercussions.
