Two edtech firms, Tynker and Epic!, acquired by BYJU’S during its US stint, were sold off at significantly reduced prices by lenders who sued for repayment of a $1.2 Bn term loan.
Tynker was bought by CodeHS for $2.2 Mn in a 99% discount from the $200 Mn BYJU’S paid in 2021, while Epic! was purchased by TAL Education Group at an 81% discount for $95 Mn, down from the $500 Mn BYJU’S spent in 2021.
These sales were approved by the US bankruptcy court and are part of BYJU’S $1 Bn expansion plan in the US, with Epic! offering kids access to books and quizzes, and Tynker providing a K-12 coding platform.
The bankruptcy case arose as BYJU’S US-based subsidiary failed to repay a $1.2 Bn term loan, leading to a court ruling in favor of lenders. BYJU’S has faced insolvency proceedings in both the US and India.
