A recent study by NetCredit found Walmart to be the most affordable grocery store in California, with 320 stores in the state, making it the third-most in the U.S.
Walmart also offers the cheapest groceries in various other major cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, as well as states such as Oklahoma, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The study compared prices at over 2,000 grocery stores and 136 chains to determine the most affordable stores by building a set basket of branded groceries.
Walmart's affordability and popularity were further supported by a YouGov list in 2025, where it ranked at the top for consideration score, and it operates smaller stores called Walmart Neighborhood Market.
