CapCut hit by US ban – and in completely unrelated news, Instagram has just revealed a new video-editing app

  • CapCut, a video-edting software, was one of many apps to be banned due to Bytedance affiliation
  • Meta, Facebook's parent company, announced their own CapCut clone named Edits
  • Edits is being marketed as a free smartphone video editor for Instagram and other platforms
  • Edits is currently only available for IOS as a pre-order with a set launch date of March 13, 2025
  • It seems suspect that Meta had this announcement ready to go on the same day of TikTok and CapCut's apparent demise
  • Other Bytedance-affiliated apps, such as TikTok, are making a comeback but US users are still unable to install app via app stores
  • It is unlikely that TikTok will be restored in full until Donald Trump signs the executive order extending the timeframe TikTok must be sold
  • Marvel Snap and Lemonade were also taken out due to Bytedance affiliation. Marvel Snap is currently down but could return in 24 hours
  • Lemonade's return is not as much of a priority compared to TikTok and other banned apps
