Sea-based car shipments to the US dropped over 70 percent in May compared to last year, with nearly 10,000 fewer vehicles imported via ocean ports according to Automotive News.
Imports saw a 72.3 percent decrease in May, with roughly 9,380 fewer '20-foot equivalent units' imported, indicating the impact of vehicle tariffs on import volumes.
Data also showed a 14.8 percent decline in imports for auto parts and accessories, leading to concerns about inventory levels in the US.
Automakers are pausing shipments in hopes of more favorable tariff conditions but will need to resume shipping to meet demand, potentially resulting in significant price increases if tariff policies remain unchanged.
