CATL has introduced a new brand of sodium-ion batteries, called Naxtra, aimed at potential replacement for EV batteries using costly and rare materials. Naxtra batteries are the first sodium-ion batteries launched at mass-production scale, offering increased energy density and range.
CATL showcased its new sodium-ion batteries with an energy density of 175 watt-hours per kilogram, which can potentially replace widely-used lithium-ion packs. As the technology advances and supply-chain develops, sodium-ion batteries may have a cost advantage over lithium-ion batteries.
CATL also introduced its second-generation Shenxing fast-charging battery, enabling a 520 km driving range on a five-minute charge, and charging from 0 to 80 percent in 15 minutes in cold weather. Additionally, the company unveiled the Freevoy Dual-Power battery with two independent energy zones for enhanced power output stability and safety.
CATL currently holds the largest market share for EV batteries globally, followed by BYD. The company's new product launches aim to further solidify its position in the highly competitive EV industry.
