In a recent Steering Committee meeting, the Airports Authority of India outlined conditions for the Parandur airport project, including compensation if the airport begins operations before Chennai airport reaches its passenger capacity.
The AAI requested rights for a new terminal at Chennai airport and 90 acres for a cargo complex, and the State government agreed to the compensation condition.
The development of both airports is deemed crucial to meet the increasing demand for aviation connectivity in the region, according to the Civil Aviation Secretary.
An investment of ₹20,000 crore is planned for the Parandur greenfield airport project, set to handle 10 crore passengers annually, with two runways, terminal buildings, and other facilities.
