Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will end production of Land Rover vehicles in China to make room for a new auto brand called Freelander, which will be exclusive to China initially but is set to go global in the future.
The Freelander brand will manufacture plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery-electric (EV), and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants, with the first model expected to enter production in China by late 2026.
The Freelander SUV will be based on Chery's T1X platform, offering off-road capabilities and a blend of off-road and sporty design cues, distinguished from other Chery brands and JLR's existing portfolio.
The original Land Rover Freelander was discontinued in 2015, and the launch of the new Freelander brand signifies a strategic move by JLR to compete in the Chinese market and globally with a fresh lineup of vehicles under the Chery joint venture.
