China has approved rules for a national 'online number' ID scheme where citizens can use one logon across multiple online services, issued by the government after providing identity documents.
The initiative aims to provide a single credential for accessing government and private online services to enhance security and reduce personal information sharing. It's not mandatory for citizens to acquire these IDs, and discrimination against other credentials is prohibited.
