Chinese researchers have developed a deep-sea cable-cutting device that could threaten critical communications networks.
The device is capable of cutting armored cables at depths of up to 4,000 meters, twice the maximum operational depth of existing subsea communications infrastructure.
Developed by the China Ship Scientific Research Centre, the device uses a diamond-coated cutting wheel and is designed for integration with China's submersibles.
The device raises concerns about potential sabotage of undersea cables and escalating tensions in international relations.
