  • Cobra effect incidents usually arise when somebody attempts to fix a problem without fully understanding the nature of the problem itself.
  • Situations where trying to fix a problem actually makes it worse have happened in web development.
  • Developers must think about how exploitable a feature is so as to patch up that loophole before it even happens.
  • Being transparent in the development of a feature is a must and mechanisms should be put in place to monitor, measure, and evaluate products to evaluate their positive or negative effects.
  • GDPR is a regulation strengthening the privacy rights of EU residents, and by making your product GDPR compliant, many Cobra effects can be mitigated.
  • Even with regulations and with keeping the Cobra effect in mind, we can still be innovative and bring much-needed value for our customers.
  • All of our actions have consequences, intended or not. While we cannot prevent all the negative side-effects of our features, we can strive to lessen them by using methods described above
  • Being vigilant and proactively monitoring for unintended consequences enable digital product success
